support K’s teeth. the funds will be used for dental surgery costs + related expenses. thank you for any support you can provide!

Since 2007, K. Barrett has faced a chain of oral surgeries— impacted wisdom teeth that resulted in painful allodynia on the chin and jaw, decay into 3 root canals, and last year, 2 longstanding abscesses that weren’t receptive to anti-biotics only to be treated w/ oral surgery.

Along with this dental history, K. was attacked and injured at work in november 2009. This traumatic experience resulted in extensive nerve damage to their right foot, arthritis, bone shifting/foot fractures as well as a sprained thumb and wrist now with arthritis and the likelihood of carpel tunnel syndrome. Treatment under worker’s comp has been slow, grueling, and often, dehumanizing. Though, the most recent court case ruled that K. should receive foot surgery, they waited for over 1.5 years for this surgery. Finally, surgery happened in the beginning of December, but Worker’s Comp (WC) has yet to update compensation or make adequate payments for basic needs to be met.

This medical journey also led K. to face increased homophobia, racism, transphobia, and ableism that has exhausted them spiritually, mentally, and emotionally. Frequently, WC doctors, surgeons and professionals will accompany gender shame or victim-blaming without understanding the particular difficulties that someone with several identities has to face professionally.

The money donated will help pay for K’s latest dental costs that include 1filling and another root canal. Though these procedures seem minimal, K. like many QTPOCs, simply seeks care that is accessible, welcoming and respectful.

Please help and ease strain for K. during this time of hardship! Thank you for all of your love, support, intentions, suggestions, and hope during this time.

Again, thank you for your time during a hectic winter time and hope that this arrives to you in warmth.

[vietnamese summer rolls] recipe.
in the past, a forever go-to has been the fresh spring roll. it is low-cost that can be spun to fancy grabbing your ingredients at any asian grocery mart or at your farmer’s market. the protein in this specific version is using an egg, but i have used extra firm tofu and sauteed it w/ braggs, sesame oil, and some garlic sliced to thin strips.  this recipe works for our benefit, the fresh herbs peaking out of the curtain of rice piper, the consistently satisfying crunch you get from the robust carrots and crisp cucumbers and the utter pride in knowing you didn’t just spend $6 at any NYC asian fusion spot for a pithy overpriced pair of spring rolls. why have only 4 when you can make several for you and your friends? the rice wrapper itself come in 16 oz. packs for anywhere between $2-$4 USD.

This is one of my favorite summer meals. We keep the wrappers around all the time to make “whatever’s-in-the-fridge” rolls, too. Delicious stuff.
